Mitzpe Shalem was established in 1970 as a Nahal settlement and transitioned into a kibbutz in 1976. Initially located near the Dargot Cliffs, it moved to its current site in 1980. The community was named after Natan Shalem, a researcher of the Judean Desert. Over time, Mitzpe Shalem underwent privatization and is now considered a cooperative community.
