Petza'el was established in 1970 by former soldiers affiliated with the Moshavim Movement. Initially located near Ma'ale Efraim, the community relocated in 1975 to its current position in the Jordan Valley to be closer to agricultural fields. The moshav is named after Phasael, the brother of Herod the Great, reflecting historical ties to the region.
