Givatayim was founded in 1922 by pioneers of the Second Aliyah as Shekhunat Borochov, the first workers' neighborhood in Jewish Palestine. In 1942, it merged with four adjacent neighborhoods to form the municipal unit of Givatayim, and it was granted city status in 1959.
